Rothenburg

Published September 20, 2010

The legend* says that when the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber was defeated in 1631, the conqueror, Count Tilly, offered to spare the city if someone drinks a glass containing 3 liters of wine in one drought. The challenge was taken by none else then the city Mayor. By drinking the full glass Mayor Nusch managed the save his beautiful city and its people.

In order to celebrate this heroic achievement, citizens of Rothenburg are organizing anual festival where they all dress up in old costumes, and drink a lot of wine. It is one of the “must see” events in Germany.

*The story sounds very romantic and poetic, but this event was only a small part of dark period in history of Europe called the Thirty Years’ War – a religious war between Catholics and Protestants which led to deaths of 7 million people in what is now known as Germany.
